Call out for new Board members

Come On “BOARD” – Help us revitalize and expand the Community Laundry Co-op!

Are you looking for an opportunity to use your energy and skills to make life better for low-income and marginalized residents in Ottawa?  Do you want to help a growing social enterprise reach its potential?   If so we’d love to hear from you!   The Community Laundry Co-operative (CLC) is currently accepting applications for positions on its Board of Directors.

About the CLC

The CLC has been changing lives through laundry for over 20 years. We provide low-cost access to self-serve laundry facilities. While members come for clean clothes, an on-site counsellor can provide one-on-one support and referrals in a friendly, informal environment. The CLC also operates Community Impact Laundry, a social enterprise wash & fold service that provides income and work experience to members who face barriers to employment. The testimony of people who credit the CLC with enabling them to improve their lives is powerful.

The Opportunity

With our new Executive Director in place and multi-year funding from the City of Ottawa for the first time, the Community Laundry Co-op is moving towards sustainability with potential to expand to other parts of the city.    CLC Board members shape the strategic direction of the organization, provide financial oversight, support outreach and advocacy, and serve as ambassadors for the CLC and its mission.

Some of the areas of expertise that volunteers who serve on the Board might offer include:

  • Governance and policy development
  • Legal
  • Leadership (Vice Chair of the Board) Fundraising/donor management
  • Finance/accounting
  • Information technology
  • Entrepreneurship/social enterprise Social work/social services
  • Human resources

The Community Laundry Co-op strives to create an organization that reflects the diversity of identities and lived experiences that exist within the communities that we work alongside.  We welcome expressions of interest from all candidates and encourage applications from marginalized communities including, but not limited to, people of colour, Indigenous peoples, 2SLBGTQ+ folks, and people with disabilities.  All work is currently remote and remote board membership can be supported should in-person meetings resume. With regards to in-person work, the CLC is housed in a physically accessible space within Heartwood House, which is itself physically accessible. We are particularly eager to welcome Francophone board members from Vanier, or Ottawa East more generally, to keep us in touch with what is going on in our community. As a busy working board, directors can expect to spend at least 6 hours a month in meetings and providing guidance and support through committees. Some board positions will require a greater time commitment than that of the directors, including the Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary, and Treasurer.
